There are many legends about the Ba Be Lake, this is because each of the ethnic groups living around has there own. These legends are however more or less similar. For example, in the twentieth book Dai Nam Nhat Book Thong Chi evoking the province of Thai Nguyen (which belonged to the Ba Be Lake at the time) it is said that one day the locals organized a festival in honor Buddha. While all participating in the festivities, an old leper lady, covered with rags, rises to the quest and was driven by everyone. Only an elderly widow was taken pity and gave him his share of rice and meat while inviting him to spend the night with her. Leprous old woman who was in fact a water dragon who took human form, said to the widow: These people die so bad all buried under the waters. For I will show you only a mound on which you can avoid death. Even today, one can see the mound emerging in the middle of Ba Be lake and whose name is Gia Mai Po, which means the language Tay Tertre Widow.

People of the Dao have a legend on the Ba Be Lake enough resemblance to that of the Tay. For them, there was once , in a village called Nam Mau, a young man who stole an ox night Buddha to kill and distribute the meat to all the villagers and his parents Ban Vai. The Buddha sent someone to investigate the disappearance of beef but everyone in the village denied having killed the sacred ox. Only a widow dared tell the truth and sent the Buddha told him to spread ashes around his house because Buddha would remove the Nam Mau village under water and only the small mound of ashes withstand flooding. This mound is of course the Po Gia Mai today.

**A scientific version of the origine

Ba Be Lake is considered Bê Ba, and which was attended by two Russian scientists, experts in the limestone area. This expedition was to give an answer to the question, why the chains of limestone mountains had a convex structure as the hills shaly facies? By solving this problem, we get by solving this problem, the data to support the origin of the lake as being due to a collapse would result .

In the late 60s, a group of researchers from the Faculty of Geology undertook further research and leads to preliminary conclusions: Ba Be Lake has its origin in land subsidence, resulting in a break in the limestone. The area where the phenomenon was most pronounced is the current base of Ba Be Lake.

Evidence of this geological phenomenon can be found on site. Indeed there are rocks in the shape of cat ears, typical of karst landforms, which normally the tip is pointing upwards. However, these stones are oriented jumble in Ba Be Lake, with the tips pointing in all directions, sometimes even 180 degrees normal. The caves were opened and the underground river terraces have been gutted, resulting in scattered here and there blocks. Finally, due to the sagging, the layers of ground limestone were broken, forming boulders, 1 to 2 m 3, stacked one on the other. In fact the original karst topography characterized by lapiés was replaced by a karst topography inverted Convex traits similar to that of a shaly terrain. There is not so long ago, in the mid-60s, a huge limestone cave collapsed, 1 km west of the hamlet of Po Bed.
